On my final day in Alaska I went to Soldotna High School to shadow the nurse. It is a small town, the high school consists of 10th, 11th, and 12th grade with a total of 700 students. It was a very eye opening day because my perception of a school nurse changed completely. Students referred to her as Nurse Tracy and she came off as one of the most trusted and most popular faculty throughout the school. Students came in constantly all day for a numerous amount of assistance. Her duties ranged from helping with ice pack placement, checking for any sort of sickness, helping the special education kids, and most of all being the support for every single person that walked through her doors. she also worked along side teachers and counselor and the principal to help many struggling student (with whatever the reason they need help). Wow, words cannot describe what my experience was like for anyone to fully understand. The main thing is that so many people struggle with mental health and nurses, especially school nurses play a very strong and important role in many lives.
The rest of the day consisted of driving back to Anchorage, about 3 hours from Soldotna and the 14 of us who traveled to Alaska together went to Moose's Tooth. Those of you who don't know, it is a restaurant with the most talked about pizza in Alaska. I can tell you that I too will share that is a must stop anytime you are visiting Anchorage! In conclusion of the whole week, Alaska is a wonderful state to visit. There is soo much to do and soo much to see! I can promise that I will be back and will explore more of what Alaska has to offer!
