Excursion Day: Seward
Today the group started the day by touring the Seward hospital. Kim RN was working this morning and she was nice enough to show the small rural facility to the nurses. The hospital has an ER and 4 inpatient rooms. The patients must be stable to stay and often have common diseases such as COPD exacerbations, pediatric patients with RSV, patients with pneumonia or other stable and easily treated disorders. They are also now beginning to have "swing bed" patients who may be recovering from a recent hospitalization from Anchorage. Unstable or complicated patients, and women in labor are transported to the Anchorage hospitals. Due to weather and distance the patients are often transported by air, either fixed wing or helicopter. The hospital is also attached to an oupatient clinic which has 6 clinic rooms.
After the tour the group set out with Adventure 60 north in a 12 person bombardier ride and guided snowshoe adventure to Exit Glacier. It was a fun time.
