First day in Alaska. Driving down to Seward.
Day 1 Friday March 15. Drove from Anchorage to Seward. Many places to stop and take pictures.
Day 2 Saturday We went and toured the Hospital in Seward. It was a very small hospital, at times only being staffed by two nurses! Then off to Exit Glacier for some fresh air!
Day 3 Sunday We drove to Homer EARLY!! Went for an ALL DAY fishing trip! That's when I found out I get sea sick! Why do they call it sea sick if you're on the ocean? I was fine until the first time we stopped. I spent the rest of the day after that either sitting on the deck with my head in my hands looking at the deck or with my head over the side of the boat admiring the color of the water as I "chummed" for fish.
Day 4 Monday After the "relaxing" day yesterday it's time to get to work. Monday was my day to go to Homer Public Health. We met with the public health nurses, went to the WIC building and met with the staff there, it was nice and informal there, very relaxing atmosphere. We got a quick tour of Homer, learned that they have a food bank one time a month, they have one womens shelter, one long term facility and a newly remodeled hospital. From there we went to the Seldovia Village Tribe Health and Wellness Center. There they have comprehensive and preventative primary care, holistic, proactive prevention and naturopathic health. They have accupuncture, massage and sauna. There services are available for anyone, not just tribal members.
Day 5 Tuesday Andrea, Sam, Annie and I flew to Port Graham and then to Seldovia in a little plane. Annie and I taught about nutritious breakfast cereals at both schools. Port Graham was a very small tribal school, very isolated, the only way to get to Port Graham or Seldovia was either by small plane or boat (I am so glad we flew!). While we were in Seldovia we also visited the Seldovia Village Tribe Visitor Center.
