My last day and a half at the Homer Public Health Office was spent attending community meetings. The first meeting included many different members such as a public health nurse, OB nurse, social worker and forensic nurse. The meeting was focused around drug use and abuse related to neonatal abstinence syndrome. It was amazing to see all the members work together for a common goal. After the meeting I attended an immunization workshop that focused on the handling and preservation of immunizations.
As a whole, my week spent in Homer was one of the best weeks of my life. I learned so much about public health nursing and all that it encompasses. My preceptor, Stephanie, and the other PHN’s, Lorne and Alivia, were so kind and welcoming and took the time out of their busy schedules to work with me. After this trip, I now feel this strong urge to pursue public health nursing because of what I learned and witnessed in Homer.
On Friday, we headed back to anchorage to meet up with the rest of our group. It was great to see everyone and hear about each other’s stories. On Saturday, we spent our day in downtown Anchorage doing some shopping and sight-seeing. In the evening some of our group went out for hibachi and had the best time! The locals at the restaurant were so welcoming and kind towards our group. At 3:30 a.m. on Sunday morning we headed for the airport. I loved every aspect of this trip and will forever be grateful for this incredible experience. I always like to say it’s not a “goodbye” but rather a “see you later” because I know deep down that I will someday return to this beautiful state.
