When we travels to new places we are not aware of our own culture, but we pick up on things in other cultures. However, we are able connect with others in some way by sharing stories. We spent the day at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. I came out full of so much knowledge by learning from speakers who grew up in Alaskan Tribes. It was an eye opening experience. Their culture is made up of so many different aspects. Alaska consists of many different tribes and languages, however many of them share similar cultures. Alaskan Natives share the belief that everything is alive and has a spirit. Since everything has a spirit, you are to respect it in it's form. Natives also ask for forgiveness, this makes for a peace with others and keeps away anger. Their clock is also on Native Time: working until the job is done. Did you know that Alaska is the most diverse state in the US? There are ninety different languages in the school districts of Anchorage and over 200 languages throughout Alaska. You can find that many Tribal areas hunt and gather like they have practiced in the past. Another fun fact is that rain coats were made from fish skin! The lesson for the day is that we all have different backgrounds and in order to understand people you have to learn about their culture. Learning is done by listening not just with the ears, but with your eyes and your heart!
Another aspect that was exciting today was that we visited a Chocolate Fountain. Although we couldn't have any, it sounded very appetizing!
