Soaking up the last of AK
The last couple days, we had some free time to explore Anchorage. Friday morning, a few of us went to hike up Flat Top Mountain, which was just a few miles from the house we were staying at. It was another beautiful sunny day. The views from the top were awesome! We could see most of Anchorage as well as other mountains surrounding it. We got lots of great pictures and soaked in the feel of Alaska.
Friday afternoon, we took the day to explore some more of Anchorage. For dinner, we went to what was supposed to be the 3rd best pizza place in the country - Moose's Tooth. We got all kinds of pizza, including one with an apricot sauce, which was my favorite. The pizza was pretty tasty! After dinner, we went back to the house and celebrated St. Patrick's day and a few of us went to a local bar.
Saturday, some of us ended up seeing a moose in the morning that was hanging out on the side of the road. It was so cool to see one up close! We also went to a fundraiser for the whale hunting season at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. We got the opportunity to try whale there if we wanted. After this, we explored some more of Anchorage. Then, we went back to the house for dinner. A couple of us wanted to see one last Alaskan sunset and maybe some Northern Lights, so we set off to Eagle River. This was a town about 25 miles outside Anchorage where we heard from some locals that we might be able to see some Northern Lights.
We were able to see a gorgeous sunset on the way up a mountain, but once it got dark out we chickened out of hiking up the mountain more to try to see the Northern Lights. We didn't want to be attacked by a moose!
Overall, I had such a great trip! Alaska is an incredible place. I will miss seeing the mountains everyday! I met so many wonderful people and it was a good learning experience to be introduced to a different culture and health care system. The ANMC and the public health in Anchorage were interesting to see and take part in. My favorite part of the trip was learning about the Native culture and having the opportunity to help at the homeless shelter. Cross country skiing and enjoying the beauty of Alaska was also great :) I feel spoiled and thankful for this!!
