Sunday, March 10th
The beginning of our day consisted of working on schoolwork in the Man Camp. It felt nice for all of us to hold each other accountable for keeping up with due dates. Later on, Anthony and Lindsay were in contact with a pilot to see if they were able to view Kotzebue and the surrounding area. The pilot later confirmed that the weather was not good for flying today. After finishing some homework, we all walked on over to a local teacher’s house- where she hosted us to socialize and play games. She kindly ordered ice cream blizzards for us from Empress, a well known restaurant in town, as a sweet treat. Afterwards, Paula and I prepared ham & swiss sliders with salad for dinner. The highlight of the night was playing charades and pictionary. It was a fun filled weekend!

Memorable parts of the day:
Paula: “We should add North and South Virginia”.-Anthony: “Then we can put in East Virginia”.
-Kjersten: “What’s a baboon?”

Today I was assigned to the outpatient discharge clinic, otherwise known as the OPD. At this site, patients are able to receive vaccines and wellness-visits. After everybody finished clinical, we met at the Episcopal Church. We were greeted with a community potluck hosted by Ernie and Mary. They prepared a delicious dinner which included reindeer stew, flour soup, halibut, shefish, salmon, and sailor boy crackers. After dinner, the Inipuits shared their traditional songs and dance. Then our friend Matt (a travel CNA) kindly invited us to see the Northern Lights! We left the trailer at 11:30pm and hiked a good mile to Cemetery Hill. With the wind howling, we saw the colorless Northern Lights and danced around to stay warm. We didn’t return until closer to 2 am but it was well worth it! It’s not everyday you see the Northern Lights in the Artic :-)

Memorable moments:
Hannah P: “Can’t we just tape the Northern Lights onto the ceiling?”
Lindsay: “I’m not gonna make Ernie carry the tables”.
Hannah I: “Hmm 8 hour shift with 3 patients on an acute care unit...rural health for ya”.
