Thursday was our final day in Bethel. I had the same preceptor at the day before. I had a patient that day that only spoke Yupik. It was difficult to communicate with him. I used hand gestures and he seemed to understand that. However, his daughter was the escort and spoke English and was able to help translate things for us. In this area, English is a lot of people's second language. One has to be very patient with them and making sure they understand things.
Later that evening we flew back to Anchorage to meet back up with the others. It was fun to hear about everyone's stories about what they encountered in clinicals.
Friday was a pretty lazy day. Did some souvenir shopping. For dinner we went to one of the best pizza places around called Moose Tooth. Their pizza was delicious. Unfortunately I only had room for 2 slices.
Saturday morning some girls and I went on a morning sunrise hike up to Flattop Mountain. The hike was strenuous but the site was amazing. On our way back to the cabin we saw a moose on the side of the road! We ended up super close to it (in a vehicle.) Later, we went back to the Alaska Native Heritage Center for a donation sale for the whale hunt for the village of St. Lawerance Island where Yaari, the one who was at the workshop, is from. It felt good supporting a good cause. I got some salve that is suppose to help one breathe with a cold. There was also jewelry made out of walrus ivory. It is amazing how artistic these people are. All hand made. After the center, we did some last minute souvenir shopping. The following day was going to be an early one since our flight left at 5am.
I have had a wonderful and enriching experience in Alaska. I definitely want to come back and see what more there is to offer.
