During my second day at the Homer Public Health Office, I learned about the three levels (systems, community, and individual) of public health nursing and the importance of building community relationships. Stephanie and I spent the majority of the day visiting the different health organizations in Homer. Our first stop was at the SVT clinic where we were given a tour of the facility and discussed wellness and integrative medicine. Next, we visited Kachemak Bay Family Planning where we discussed outreach for STI (sexually transmitted infections) services and condom dispense. The women at the office were extremely kind and passionate about their job and role in the community. Just down the road, we visited Sprout Family Services, an organization that provides parents with support and education to promote their child’s growth and development. I was able to get a tour of the facility and meet with all the amazing staff. Next, we drove to the Homer Medical Clinic where we assessed vaccine storage and toured the facility. I was also able to meet two providers who care for the Homer population.
Our last stop was at the Homer Airport where I witnessed how labs are sent out and where vaccinations are received for the Homer Public Health Office. We also stopped by Smokey Bay Air so I could see the small planes that the PHN’s use for itinerant travel to the small native villages. I was even able to go out and look inside one of the planes!
