Day One:
On our first day in Alaska we visited the Alaskan Native Heritage Center in Anchorage. We were greeted by a woman named Yaari who we spent the day with. For the first part of the day we attended a cultural workshop where we learned about the different native cultures in Alaska. Yaari shared her story with us, including the difficult transition she faced when moving from her small village to the bigger city of Anchorage. The second part of our day was spent touring six authentic life-sized native dwellings situated in a wooded area. During the tour we saw our first moose in Alaska!
Day Two:
On our second day, we traveled to the Alyeska Ski Resort which is situated in Girdwood, Alaska, approximately 30 miles from Anchorage. Roughly half of our group chose to downhill ski, including myself, while the others chose to cross country ski and snow shoe. Growing up downhill skiing, it had always been a dream of mine to ski in the mountains. During the day, we had the opportunity to ride the tram to the top of a mountain and ski down. I hope to someday return to Alyeska.
Day Three:
On our third day in Alaska we traveled two hours from Anchorage to the small town of Seward. In Seward we visited the Alaska Sea life Center where we got to see seals, sea lions, puffins and more! Afterwards we ate lunch at a local restaurant and then did some shopping. My favorite part of the day was when we took a walk along the beach and saw a humpback whale. Each day I fall more and more in love with this beautiful state!
