Today we toured the Alaskan Native Heritage Center to learn about the very diverse state of Alaska. One of the speakers educated us in how to speak to some indigenous people. She states that when asking someone "How are you?", American people tend to only want the answer of "Fine, how are you?" as to where the Alaska Native people will actually tell you how they are. She also said in terms of the nursing profession we should ask "How are you feeling physically?", "How are you feeling emotionally?", "How are you feeling mentally?", and "How are you feeling spiritually?". This allows for us, as nurses, to explore their mind, body and spirit, which is a holistic nursing concept. This I loved and will use with patient's in the future.
