We arrived late Thursday night and under went a 3 hour change of time. While on our flights we were given the opportunity to tell people around us on the flights that we were Minnesota St. Scholastica nursing students coming to Alaska to see the health care field and different areas of nursing in Alaska. I thought this was neat to be able to get our school name out.
Friday morning we got up and made our way to the Alaskan Heritage Center. This was an experience for us to learn more about the Alaskan Natives and their culture. We toured examples of their different native homes and learned about their interactions with each other. A few things I learned included:
-Be careful with eye contact
-Instead of asking "how are you today?" Ask "how are you physically today?" To them this seems more personal and easier to answer.
-Some people do not shake hands to greet, rather a simple acknowledging head bow.
These were very important to learn about, especially since we may be seeing them in our clinical locations.
