On Friday we started our Alaskan adventure at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. During our time here we toured the different areas of the campus including the hospital and the traditional healing clinic. The medical center in Anchorage provides the traditional healing service to Alaska Natives and incorporates the use of spiritual healing, herbal remedies, and other practices that were once used among the different tribes. Another unique aspect of the ANMC is that they have a building dedicated to patient and family housing. This allows those who need more times at the hospital whether it be for treatment, various appointments, and surgery, to stay there. Although the focus of the hospital is Alaskan Native, anyone who needs care is able to access it's services. One of the most interesting and unique aspects of this facility is the care coordination teams. Each team consists of a blend of different healthcare workers that are assigned to patients and work with them on an individual level to make sure they are receiving the care they need. They also help them to navigate the healthcare system and ensure they have easier access as well as making sure services are not given unnecessarily.
At the end of the day we traveled to the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Here we met Yaari, a Yupik Shaman. During our time with her she told us about the history of the different tribes. She also explained cultural viewpoints and beliefs through Native stories/legends that have been passed down through the years. From her teaching I have begun to have a better understanding of the Alaska Native culture, how it differs from my own, and how nonverbal cues can help me with my future interactions with Alaska Natives.
