Rebekah and I peeled off from the group on Friday to pursue our shared interest in birth and midwifery, and had a chance to tour two birth centers which were great choices as they represented two different out-of-hospital birth modalities. One was more clinical and utilized nurse-midwives and the other catered to a more natural crowd, and felt more welcoming to me. They utilized both CPM's & Nurse-Midwives. At both places, it was a wonderful chance to meet women who were as passionate about birth as we were and to learn about the ways that legislation has shaped what we can offer versus what they can offer. We are a bit behind, Minnesota!
We met with someone for lunch at a place with lovely food (open faced crab sandwich and clam soup), a great view of Sleeping Lady mountain, and learned a bit about the Tlingit tribe as well as how nice it can be to make new connections. Then it was off to gather for our evening meal. Back at our abode for the evening, we were up for making the first dinner and figured since we were in Alaska and all we should probably have salmon. We'd had fun finding a good place to buy it. So our second evening we puttered about the kitchen putting together a pretty rockin' meal of Poached Salmon, Steak, Rice Pilaf, and sautéed veggies that went over pretty well. So far we've met incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable people and had wonderful weather and great food. I'm enjoying Alaska and having a wonderful time. Talking and getting to know new people, good food, and sunshine. Life is good.
