We drove down the Kenai peninsula Wednesday afternoon on a wonderful clear day so we could see the amazing views and hike down to the Kenai river. We stayed at an adorable rental cabin just the other side of Homer whose claim to fame is that it is on the homestead of the show Alaska: The Last Frontier. We had a great view of the ocean with mountains across the way and our yard moose.
We had the privilege of working with school nurses in and around Kenai, Soldotna, Anchor Point, and Homer. Thursday and Friday we started our day meeting with the school nurse and then we would do teachings in the classrooms. Topics varied, but mine mostly centered around health promotion of varying sorts. One of my favorite topics and I got to share it with 4 year olds on up to 8th graders. The 4 year olds were of course more impressed than the 8th graders. I was not sure going in what to expect or what I may get out of the experience but it was a blast! The school nurses that I worked with were amazing. We had great conversations about the area, working as a school nurse, previous experiences, and more. One worked with three schools along with being an EMT. She talked about the differences in working in the hike in Russian village versus the town school. I left both schools with a big smile on my face, as those who know me would not be surprised to learn. Hanging out with kids is just plain fun. We learned a lot from each other!
When I was talking to the older kids we would branch out into ways we can also keep our brains healthy and some of the reasons why we might make bad choices. The kids were all great, they were also very much 12 and 13 years old.

We wrapped up our day and headed back to Anchorage through the rainy mountain pass. I continue to marvel at these mountains and the ever changing moods that they show to us.
