This morning we went back to ANMC hospital to tour the clinic and traditional healing center.
The clinic was fascinating because of their tremendous amount of teamwork. They have a team of health care workers for each patient and their called a "pod," Each pod has a care manager (RN), 1-2 CMA's, 1 primary doctor, dietitian, and a behavior health specialist. The same team works together everyday on caring for patients. Because they work with the same team members everyday, their communication skills and care they deliver their patients is spectacular. I'd love to see this kind of teamwork and collaboration back home in MN!
After we toured the clinic we went to the traditional healing area of the clinic. This was so cool because it's something I never knew much about or understood what they did. I found out they deliver one on one therapy sessions, healing hands which can be done verbally or physically (massage for example), group therapy sessions, and they also have an herbal garden that they offer to help heal patient as well. The environment of the traditional healing was very calm, quiet, and had dimmed lighting. Everyone spoke to you in a calm voice and it made me feel very relaxed to be there.
After the wonderful tours at the ANMC, we went to the University of Alaska to look at their nursing department which was also AMAZING! Sue looked like a little kid in a candy store because she was so excited to be there! Once we got that tour we started the long drive towards Homer. On the way we stopped to see the bible camp Andrea works at during the summertime. Finally, around 6:30 PM we arrived at our place in Homer. The views here are incredible! I can't wait to explore the area more and head to the elementary school tomorrow to work with the school nurse!
