Today, I spent the day at Southcentral Foundation in Anchorage, Alaska. I learned so much, I think my head my explode. The clinic offers many services: OB, pediatrics (with a brand-spankin new build coming soon), dental, etc. They also offer traditional healing, which I found out, is only available to Alaska Natives. That is amazing that they offer that to individuals who may not always wish to seek treatment with medications from pharmaceutical companies but rather, herbs, healing touch, etc. performed by traditional healers of similar traditions. That being said, the main focus of care regardless of ethnic background is providing holistic care. The integrated care teams consisting of a CMS (they do scheduling, communicating with customer-owners, etc.), a CMA (they do more of the hands-on care with vitals, clinic visit data, etc.), a physician (self-explanatory), and a nurse case manager (also self-explanatory). They also have a Behavioral Health Counselor available on each team to ensure a more holistic approach to health care. What is not self-explanatory about this organization is the way in which the team coordinates together. I do not know of one other facility whose setup among the teams is one area that allows for ZERO hierarchy amongst the team. Everyone plays a significant role in the care coordination of the team and providing the best patient care possible. All I know is that America's health care system would face better cost effectiveness and less readmissions/unnecessary clinical visits if they were to follow this method.
