Once we arrived we got to see the school. There were 40 students total, for the high school, middle school and elementary school. It. Was. Tiny. They had a central meeting area, and then the three different schools each had their own wing and one classroom. For the high school and middle school, I did a presentation about sugary beverages where they had to calculate the amount of sugar in each drink and measure out the appropriate amount of sugar. Overall, that went very well! Then with the elementary students I did a presentation on "My Plate". First we listed of different fruits, vegetables, grain, protein, and dairy. Never in a million years would I guess that there would be a fruit called a "salmon-berry". Only in Alaska! I also have to laugh at the protein they listed off: bear, moose, elk, salmon, caribou, and salami. :)
I am so lucky to have been able to fly over to this little town and see what the school nurse did. She was in charge of four other village schools, and would only go to each school about 2 or 3 times a month. She was in charge of making sure the students were up to date on vaccinations. Was organizing the medications the students would need when they went on a field trip. And of course, taking care of the ones that aren't feeling well that day. I have never had the opportunity to shadow a school nurse before, so it was an eye opening experience for me. They do a lot of things that people just do not think about.
Enjoy the photos!!
